After watching the latest Netflix movie What the Health over the weekend, I had some confirmation about some of the many things that are going on with the food and pharmaceutical industry and our health. Although I’ve watched similar movies in the past, this one was just as compelling and reminded me why I strive to be as plant based as possible. But one of the striking things that they discussed in this movie that was not discussed in previous food based movies is that our genetics play a major role on our health. At around 20 minutes into the movie, Dr. Alan Goldhamer and Dr. Greger both discuss the impact that nutrition has on our dna. Dr. Goldhamer discusses our genetic predisposition by saying that “what determines whether it manifests or not may be those epigenetic variables. The things that you can control: the environmental factors, the dietary factors, the lifestyle factors.” Another consulting doctor in the movie, Dr. Michael Greger goes on to say that we can “change the expression of genes…by what we eat, what we put into our bodies. So even if you’ve been dealt a bad genetic deck, you can still re-shuffle it with diet.”
